“Great for apartment-dweller and neighborsGreat for apartment-dweller and neighbors: This Iris Ohyama washing machine replaced a used LG that worked well for just over 15 years. Both with 5 kg load ratings, but the Iris Ohyama is more compact. After 17 loads in the first month, I am completely satisfied.Perhaps because the LG had a larger drum, there was more room for items to redistribute asymmetrically and cause a load imbalance, requiring manual re-arrangement to resume spinning. This has not happened with the Iris Ohyama. With load asymmetry, it might vibrate a bit during a spin cycle, but a damping mechanism between the body and the base prevents vibrations from transmitting to the floor.With the old LG, I could start a cycle while adding bath water. In contrast, the Iris Ohyama access door locks during operation, except when the pause button is pressed. New machine, new habits. Now I add bath water before starting a cycle. Another difference is that the LG lint collector was a mesh bag that visibly protruded into the drum space, so it was easy to see when it was time to take it out and remove the lint. The LG lint collector is integrated into the drum and collects more lint. Best to check it right after every wash; fresh, moist lint is easy to remove.Using tap water instead of bath water, the Iris Ohyama fills faster than the LG did, and the Iris Ohyama time-remaining display accurately takes account of this relatively short fill time. In contrast, the LG filled slowly, and this time was not reflected in the display, which just showed the same number of minutes remaining during a lengthy fill.The ultimate comparison between my old LG and new Iris Ohyama will be its service life. The LG was gift when I moved to Japan in January, 2008. It was already used, from the estate of a colleague's parents. That LG served well until late January, 2023. Will the Iris Ohyama last as long? I hope to live long enough myself to find out. In the meantime, count me as a satisfied user.”
